You don’t need a special “girls” edition. The best-rated building sets on our chart are sold for girls and boys alike, and the right pick depends on age and theme, not colour. Below are nine picks from our Building Toys chart, grouped by age, all rated 4.6★ or better. Prices and ratings are from our September 24, 2026 catalog check.
Ages 3–5: start with magnetic tiles
1. PicassoTiles 100-Piece Magnetic Tile Set. #1 in Magnetic & Felt Playboards, with 40,549 ratings at 4.8★. A hundred pieces is enough to build a castle, not just a cube. It is the same set that leads our general building-toy guide. See its full ToyScout page.
2. MAGNA-TILES microMAGS 26-Piece Travel Set. #1 in Toy Magnetic Building Sets. It has 26 small tiles, and the metal tin works as both storage and a baseplate, so it is the tile set to take to restaurants and on car journeys. It is also a smaller starter set if 100 pieces is more than you need.
3. GobiDex 100-Piece Unicorn Magnetic Tiles. This is the most openly “for girls” set on the list: rainbow and candy patterns plus six unicorn figures. It is rated 4.6★, but on only 71 ratings, so it has much less track record than the sets above. Pick it if the unicorn theme is the point. Otherwise, PicassoTiles is the safer choice for about the same money.
4. LEGO Classic Medium Creative Brick Box. Bricks in 35 colours with eyes, wheels and windows, in a box that doubles as storage. It has 57,940 ratings. With no set model to finish, children build whatever they like.
Ages 7–8: the Creator 3-in-1 animals
Each box in LEGO’s Creator 3-in-1 line builds three different models, one at a time, so a single set gives three builds.
5. Cute Hamster with a Flower. Rated 4.9★, it builds a posable hamster, a hedgehog holding a flower, or an eagle with a nest and egg. It is the smallest proper LEGO set on this list.
6. Exotic Parrot. A parrot on a branch with moving wings and tail, which can be rebuilt as a frog or a fish. It has 8,397 ratings at 4.8★, the most-reviewed of the Creator animals we track.
7. Retro Camera (ages 8+). A camera with a moving lens, film to load and a strap, which can be rebuilt as a video camera or a TV. It is rated 4.9★ across 4,942 ratings, and it suits the child who wants to photograph everything.
Ages 9–12: LEGO Botanicals
Botanicals sets build flowers and plants that stay on a desk or shelf, so the finished build doubles as room decor.
8. Daisies. Three large daisies, small daisy stems and lavender, with adjustable stems and a ladybug. It ranks #94 across all of Toys & Games, which is high for a small LEGO set.
9. Happy Plants. A baby dracaena and pilea in two smiling pots. It has 4,735 ratings at 4.9★, and it is desk decor as much as a toy.
What to skip
A “girls” edition that costs more than the standard box for the same piece count. Compare the piece count, not the colour. Sets with small pieces bought below the age on the box: a 9+ set given to a five-year-old ends up in the junk drawer. And brand-new listings with a few dozen reviews, unless the theme is the whole point of the gift.
The bottom line
Ages 3–5: PicassoTiles 100, or microMAGS for a smaller starter set. Ages 7–8: any Creator 3-in-1 animal. Ages 9–12: Botanicals. For the general, not girl-specific, list, see our best building toy gifts guide, or browse the whole Building Toys chart.
