A good family game does three things: it takes five minutes to learn, it works for a seven-year-old and a grandparent at the same table, and it is over before anyone loses interest. We went through the 75 games on our Games chart and kept ten that fit, each rated 4.6★ or better with at least 19,000 Amazon ratings. Ratings and ranks are from our September 24, 2026 catalog check.
The quick answer
- Best all-round: SKYJO, rated 4.8★ across 76,155 ratings, the most-reviewed game we track.
- Easiest to learn: UNO, with 60,942 ratings at 4.8★.
- Best for a quick round: Monopoly Deal, which plays in about 15 minutes.
- Best for word lovers: Bananagrams, 4.9★ with 26,903 ratings.
Card games for the whole table
1. SKYJO. #5 in Dedicated Deck Card Games and #74 across all of Toys & Games. You try to finish with the fewest points over several rounds, and the maths is simple addition, so younger players can keep up. See its full ToyScout page.
2. UNO. #2 in Dedicated Deck Card Games. Players match colours or numbers and race to empty their hand. The deck includes three blank Wild Cards, so each family can write its own house rules.
3. Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. #4 in Dedicated Deck Card Games. It is a fast, loud, slap-the-pile game that suits big groups and mixed ages, and it fits in a bag.
4. Exploding Kittens. For 2 to 5 players, ages 7 and up. You draw cards and use action cards to avoid the exploding kitten. It is the lowest-rated game on this list at 4.6★, but it has 59,533 ratings behind that score, and it suits teens and adults as much as children.
Quick-playing rummy and property games
5. Monopoly Deal. It plays in about 15 minutes: you swap, steal and scheme to be the first to collect three complete property sets. It gives you the Monopoly feel without the three-hour board game.
6. Five Crowns. Rated 4.9★ across 34,429 ratings. A rummy-style game with a fifth suit of stars and rotating wild cards. It is a good choice for adult game nights that still include children.
7. Phase 10. Players race to complete ten different phases made of sets, runs or same-colour cards. Those who do not finish a phase repeat it, so a full game lasts longer than the others here. It comes in a tin that travels well.
Classic board games and a word game
8. Sorry! #2 in Board Games. The first player to get all their pawns home wins, with plenty of chances to send someone else back to start. It is the one on this list for younger children, at ages 6 and up.
9. Connect 4. #1 in Board Games, for two players, ages 6 and up. This edition adds a blue Blocker Disc for extra strategy. It is the right pick when only two people want to play.
10. Bananagrams. 144 letter tiles in a banana-shaped pouch, and no board or timer. Everyone builds their own word grid at the same time, so a fast player and a slow one can share a game. It is rated 4.9★ and travels easily.
What to skip
Games with a long set-up for a mixed-age table: if explaining the rules takes longer than the first round, people drift away. Unofficial or “card game” clones with a few dozen reviews: the original versions above have tens of thousands. And the game your children are too young for: check the age on the box, since a 7+ game played by a five-year-old tends to end in tears.
The bottom line
If you buy one, buy SKYJO or UNO: both are rated 4.8★ with more than 60,000 ratings, and both suit kids from about seven or eight (UNO is 7+, SKYJO 8+). For adults who want a bit more, add Five Crowns. For two players, Connect 4. Check the Amazon price before you buy, since it changes often. For more, see our full Games page.
